I have now set up a testing environment with Ubuntu Linux 9.10 32bit and Sun Java 6 update 15. This set up is running inside a VisualBox on my Windows XP. This should not make a difference for MGM.

On this set up MGM Version 1.1-beta3 (build 211) is starting up without problem and I also logged in and did some uploads/downloads.

From the stack trace I suspect that the problem is related to the ~/Pictures folder. On the first or with empty preferences MGM defaults the local directory to ~/Pictures. Do you have a ~/Pictures folder on your machine with lots of folders and subfolders? If yes, you could change/insert a parameter in the preferences file to point to another folder for your local images.

- Open the file ~/.MediaGalleryManager/preferences/MediaGalleryManager_Preferences.properties
- Insert/change the parameter "local.gallery.path.last=" to another existing folder that has only a view subfolders or is empty. E.g. local.gallery.path.last=/home//top-shots/

I will try some tests with a Pictures folder populated with some hundreds of subfolders.
