"Open" on Mac not working properly

When trying to open a different folder then "Pictures" that is open when you first start up the application the open dialog only lets me select an image file and not a folder itself and then displays that image as a root folder and nothing inside.

Has anyone else experienced this and how did you get around it ?

Mac OSX 10.7.5
Java 7 (Latest as of this post)
